Owls!

June 14, 2011

As I mentioned a couple days ago, I’ve been knitting a toque.  And I’m done. Here it is:

It’s got cabled owls!

(It’s also very difficult to take a flattering self-portrait with an SLR that weighs a ton.)

Yeah, I know it’s June.   But this is Canada.  Some days when I leave for the field it is 21°C, some days it is 3°C.  And it will be fall all too soon, I’m sure.

The brim turned out a little odd, not snug like it should be, but I think that has to do with my casting on technique.  My knitting skills are a bit rusty.  But overall I like it.

I first heard about owl cables from my sister, who wanted to make a sweater (did you ever do that, Michelle?)

The pattern is available for free here at Penguin Purls; I found it through  Ravelry.

I put button eyes on one of the owls.  I got the buttons from a thrift store, along with  some neat flower ones and a bunch of others, all for $1 total.  I think I might go back.  You never know when I might need some cool buttons for some project.

And speaking of owls:

Baby great horned owls!

We’ve been keeping track of owl nests we find (they don’t always get along so well with ferruginous hawks.)  This one and another are quite near to two of our hawk nests, so we’ve been watching the owlets grow.  At this age their eyes seem lost in all their fluff, a little like they are wearing a burqa.

Do you like owls?

Are you on Ravelry?

Nope, I haven’t knit that owls sweater yet. But I do have the yarn. And yes I am on Ravelry and yes I like owls. I have two owl vases, two owl piggy banks, owl salt and pepper shakers, and at least two ornamental owls that I can think of. And an owl change tray (one of those little plates you put spare change in). And an owl mug.

Ravelry is great… Not just to keep track of what you have made, but to search out patterns (yay free patterns!), check to see if a yarn you have has been successfully used for a certain project by another knitter, answers questions, shows you mods done by others, etc. Very handy!

I have had a pattern for an owl sweater that I’ve wanted to make forever, but it seems so daunting. I just bookmarked the hat pattern though. I’m more of an instant gratification girl anyway.

Hello! I like your diary very much) I want to do the owl sweater but I don’t know how to make it. Do you have a plan of this sweater?
